This project has now ended

The world lost 94% of it’s vegetable seed varieties in the 20th Century whilst 67% of the world’s seed are now owned by just 4 global corporations. Nottingham Seed Sovereignty sets out to share seed saving skills, preserve open pollinated seed and develop a community seed library. This project was funded by The People’s Postcode Trust and supported by players of The People’s Postcode Lottery.

Become a Seed Guardian

Each Seed Guardian will get:

✿ access to seed saving training and a programme of workshops
✿ packet of ‘real seed’, a variety suited to grower’s environment
✿ how to and instructions pack with other freebies and leaflets
✿ free advice and support on hand via phone, email or Facebook
✿ invites to meet-ups, events, and talks

In return each Seed Guardian will need to:

✿ document ‘seed to seed’ experience (photos and a write up)
✿ donate a proportion of saved seed to the seed library
✿ be willing to assist future members of the programme

Seed Guardians will also commit to:

✿ growing their variety without chemicals to organic principles
✿ take the necessary steps to avoid cross pollination of the variety
✿ harvest seed from disease free plants (we will show you how!)

Donate to the Seed Library

If you have already been saving seeds and would like to donate to the community seed bank please contact us at seedsaversnotts@gmail.com. We will accept open pollinated fruit, vegetable and herb varieties. If your seeds tell a story (Where did they come from? Where did you grow them? How long has the variety been around for? ) then please share it along with your seeds. We are unable to accept F1 hybrid or genetically modified seeds so check your seed packets carefully if you plan to save or share seed bought from elsewhere. The seeds should be collected from disease free plants that have been grown using organic principles, stored correctly and not cross-pollinated with other varieties.

Seed Workshops

We host a variety of seed based workshops from making seed bombs, to learning how to save your own seed. Under our project Nottingham Seed Sovereignty we have a programme of seed saving, harvesting, and sowing workshops in order to build a network of Seed Guardians.

Seeds for Communities

We provide native wildflower and pollinator friendly seeds to schools and communities to encourage children and their families to learn why growing flowers is important for encouraging biodiversity. Participants take part in a citizen science project mapping wildflower patches.
