This project has now ended

97% of wildflower areas in the UK have been lost since 1930. This has created a lack of forage for pollinators, deepening a decline in both wild and managed bee populations. Our mission is to engage more Nottingham City residents with local biodiversity and greener environments.

AIMS

✿ Increase in areas of wildflower and pollinator forage

✿ More Nottingham citizens engaged with local biodiversity

HOW?

✿ Increase native wildflower seed availability to groups

✿ Installation of native wildflower areas

✿ Citizen science projects (flower mapping and bee count)

✿ Hold a Bee Fair in Nottingham to celebrate all things bee

ACTIVITIES

Bee Outreach

Heard the term ‘Save the Bees’, but not sure why we need to? We are developing resources that highlight the importance of pollinators, wild bees, and honeybees for planet health and our own wellbeing.

Bee Workshops

We can host educational talks, workshops and events for all ages and groups. In our workshops we explore the world of bees, play pollination games, learn why bees are important, and how to help them.

Community support

We can provide help and advice to communities who want to develop their local green spaces to be more bee friendly. We can support bug hotel development, native wildflower planting, garden events and more.

Bee Sanctuary

We co-created an Education Garden with Greenscene CIC, The Urban Worm CIC and Moo Haven Horse Rescue. The garden provided a space for Earth based education, worm farming, and biodiversity.

CITIZEN SCIENCE

Wildflower Mapping

We want to make Nottingham the most bee friendly city in the UK. This means that we need to plant lots of forage for pollinators. Being able to see where seeds have been planted helps us to understand where bees can obtain forage, the types of pollen available, and which areas of the city need more planting action! Our seed citizen science project maps areas of wildflowers planted by participants. Every seed packet contains enough seeds to cover a 1 metre squared area. Once you’ve planted your seeds, click this link to drop a pin in the area you planted them. You will need a Google email to do this, if you don’t have one just let us know and we can update the map for you.

The Big Bee Count

The Big Bee Count will be taking place again in Summer 2022. The aim of the project is to record the number of bees and different bee species found in Nottingham. We will use data to find what other actions are needed in the local area, as well as sending it to be used for national bee research including National Pollinator Survey and The Bumblebee Conservation Trust. Drop a pin where you participated in a bee count. In the pin comment section let us know the results of your bee count sheet and which bees you saw. You will need a Google email account to do this, if you don’t have one let us know and we can do it for you - or send a picture of your bee count sheet to us via email.
