Education Garden

In collaboration with The Urban Worm CIC, Greenscene Education CIC and Moo Haven Horse Rescue, we built a community garden and education space. In early 2019, work began at the site based at Moo Haven Horse Rescue & Rehabilitation. Moo Haven do brilliant work with traumatised horses and vulnerable young people, find out more about them here. Located near to the River Trent, Holme Pierrepont and Skylarks Nature Reserve, the site enjoys the beauty of the countryside yet still very close to the city, making it accessible for many different groups and communities. The garden was created for:

✿ Vulnerable people and young adults to connect with the food system and natural world

✿ Biodiversity to flourish and as a haven for all bees

✿ The production of organic and biodynamic herbs, flowers and vegetables

✿ The production, saving, storage, stewardship and sharing of open pollinated seeds

✿ Community composting, worm farming and the production of vermicompost

✿ Workshops, school holiday clubs, women’s gatherings and community events

Apart from the polytunnel, all materials were reclaimed, reused, or repurposed and the garden worked to maintain zero waste and closed loop principles. Raised beds were made from wooden planks which were removed from a barn at Moo Haven, we repurposed out of date public event banners from Fast Graphics to line them, and we collected pallets from local businesses, turning them into composting bays and potting tables.

The garden is now run solely by Moo Haven.
